Each year, between 1.7 and 3 million concussions occur in sports and recreational activities, with football alone contributing around 300,000 cases. Shockingly, half of all concussions remain unreported or undetected.
Also commonly referred to as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a concussion results from a forceful impact to the head or body, causing the brain to rapidly move within the skull. Important to note, less than 10 percent of concussions involve loss of consciousness.
A concussion changes how the brain normally functions. Concussions can have serious and long-term health effects, and even a seemingly mild 'ding' or a bump on the head can be serious. Signs and symptoms of concussion are typically noticed right after the injury, but some might not be recognized until days or weeks later.
Individuals who sustain a concussion are three times more likely to sustain a second concussion. Lack of proper diagnosis and management of concussion may result in serious long-term consequences, repeated concussions, and prolonged recovery.
Concussions present complex challenges with varying recovery timelines. Due to the unique nature of each case, recovery durations vary greatly, with some individuals improving within days and others requiring weeks or even months. Seeking prompt and appropriate care significantly increases the likelihood of full and expedited recovery.
While most concussion symptoms resolve within seven to 10 days for the majority of individuals, a notable 20-30 percent may experience Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) that persist for years without proper management.
